Welcome to South Mountain Elementary School!
Our school opened in 1997 and is one of the newest schools in the Wausau School District. We currently serve approximately 250 students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade.
South Mountain is a full service elementary school that provides comprehensive K-5 programming including art, music, physical education, science and library. Our focus at South Mountain is on the development of the whole child; socially, emotionally and academically. We also offer special services in the areas of Special Education, Multi-Lingual Support, and Gifted and Talented programming. Staff at South Mountain believe strongly in educating students in an inclusive environment while also providing students the individualized support they need to be successful.
South Mountain is very fortunate to have an active and successful Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO has been supportive of the school, and has provided many opportunities for students to grow, as well as materials, resources, and supplies needed throughout the school. The PTO also sponsors a number of events throughout the year including; Ice Cream Socials, Trunk or Treat, Book Fairs, and our End of the Year Celebration. All of these events make South Mountain School and the surrounding community a special place to be.
We Believe...
- That a safe and physically and emotionally comfortable environment promotes student learning.
-
The core standards will be met by incorporating a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences in student learning.
-
That students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process using a variety of thinking and reasoning strategies.
-
When goals/targets are clearly set students take more ownership and experience more success in their learning.
-
Staff, administrators, parents, and the community share the responsibility for helping students learn.
-
A student’s performance is enhanced by mutual respect among students, staff, administrators, parents and the community.
