Welcome to South Mountain Elementary School!

Our school opened in 1997 and is one of the newest schools in the Wausau School District. We currently serve approximately 260 students in grades Pre-K  through fifth grade. South Mountain is proud to offer single, multiage, and split-grade instruction.

South Mountain is a full service elementary school that provides comprehensive K-5 programming including art, music, physical education and library. We also offer special services in the areas of Special Education, English as a Second Language, Reading Interventions, Gifted/Talented, and Speech and Language. South Mountain believes strongly in educating students in an inclusive environment while also providing students with resource room options.

Our focus here at South Mountain is on the development of the whole child, socially and academically. As a result, students are continually provided with opportunities to learn in a variety of ways that make use of their individual learning styles. Students are regularly put into learning situations that require interaction with other students and adults. This requires constant grouping and interaction with other students. This approach to learning makes the mission statement of South Mountain Elementary come to life each school day.

South Mountain is proud to offer technology instruction for students in grades two through five. Students learn the basics of publishing, keyboarding, Internet uses, and research techniques. Students also learn how to create and author multimedia presentations using Power Point and Hyper Studio. Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten employ technology on a daily basis while utilizing the Breakthrough to Literacy Program. It is our belief that technology is used to enhance learning. Technology is integrated seamlessly into learning opportunities.

South Mountain is very fortunate to have an active and successful Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO has been supportive of the school, and has provided many opportunities for students to grow, as well as materials, resources, and supplies needed throughout the school. The PTO has recently assisted in the purchasing of smart boards for every classroom. The PTO also sponsors a number of events throughout the year including; Ice Cream Socials, School Dances, Holiday Activities, Book Fairs, and our End of the Year Celebration. All of these events make South Mountain School and the surrounding community a special place to be.

We Believe...

  • That a safe and physically and emotionally comfortable environment promotes student learning.
  • The core standards will be met by incorporating a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences in student learning.

  • That students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process using a variety of thinking and reasoning strategies.

  • When goals/targets are clearly set students take more ownership and experience more success in their learning.

  • Staff, administrators, parents, and the community share the responsibility for helping students learn.

  • A student’s performance is enhanced by mutual respect among students, staff, administrators, parents and the community.
